The result is intelligent pharmaceutical formulations with improved functionality and high therapeutic benefit. Its portfolio includes EUDRAGIT® acrylic acid copolymers, biodegradable RESOMER® copolymers – which are based on lactic and glycolic acids and degrade in the body a er a certain length of time – and adjuvants for processing raw tablet compounds.

The intelligent protective and release mechanisms of the EUDRAGIT® pharmaceutical polymers ensure that the active ingredients in tablets and capsules act at the right time and the right place in the gastrointestinal tract. The main focus of research and development is on new technologies for improving the transport, bioavailability, and release of active ingredients in the digestive tract. The most recent research successes are melt extrusion, a technology platform that can improve the bioavailability of poorly soluble active ingredients, and the modular drug delivery system, which can be used to process biopharmaceuticals into tablets. Thanks to our global laboratory network, we’re able to carry out new developments on site together with our customers. Furthermore, in Germany, Evonik operates a modern cGMP laboratory for producing tablets for clinical studies.

In the pharmaceutical industry, biodegradable RESOMER® polymers are the materials of choice when it comes to formulating innovative biotechnological active ingredients, such as peptides. The medical product industry uses them to manufacture bioresorbable coronary stents and screws and plates.

Typical pharmaceutical applications are depot pharmaceutical forms that work in the body for up to six months. The dosage forms are often microparticles, rod-shaped implants, or gel-like depot systems, generally applied subcutaneously or intramuscularly. They are used, for example, in the therapy of schizophrenia, in the palliative therapy of prostatic carcinoma, and in coronary stents.
